COMBILASER PROJECT – latest news
The past 2 months have seen intensive activities from all consortium partners of the COMBILASER project which has entered the second half of its third and final project year. The SiEVA Development Centre continues to offer intensive support especially in exploitation and dissemination fields. This will be crucial in providing outreach to the interested public during the upcoming validation and implementation stages of the project in order to ensure that COMBILASER solutions see their industrial potential fulfilled.
After successfully concluding the second Technical review by the European Commission in March, the consortium held a new consortium meeting in Orange, France during 8th and 11th May. The meeting was held at the premises of Mondragon Assembly (a company part of the internationally renowned Spanish worker cooperative MONDRAGON) The consortium reviewed the achieved results and set out the work that needs to be done in the future. The final year thus means an intensive prototype validation phase for all three of COMBILASER's industrial partners: Hidria AET (automotive), Orkli (white goods), TMC (oil and gas industry). The SiEVA Development Centre aims to upgrade its intensive market-gathering data and background data in the second year with an intensive work on the exploitation plans for the COMBILASER-developed solutions. An important focus for SiEVA in the final year of the COMBILASER project is therefore strong information outreach towards the interested European public on the achieved results of the project and opportunities that these present for the European industry.
In order to achieve such a strong public outreach, the SiEVA Development Centre plans to create a project presentation video which shall be published shortly.
Our activities in the month of June included support for validation activities in order to verify the developed solutions. The SiEVA Development Centre provided especially strong support for validation activities for Hidria AET (COMBILASER industrial partner and project coordinator). Hidria AET finished the installation of its pilot solution in June and is beginning to test it to be applied to the laser-welding process for the all-new hi-tech Hidria OPTYMUS pressure sensor glow plug. The applied COMBILASER laser-welding solution incorporates key features provided by project partners. One of the key is the Self-Learning-System feature provided by the University of Sheffield. German partner 4D provided the laser monitoring system. Cavitar from Finland provided the melt pool monitoring system. Recendt from Austria provided the NDT system. Laser Zentrum Hannover and IK4 LORTEK from Spain brought the whole solution into a functioning package. The developed system enables zero-defect production, enhancing prospects to completely discard bad pieces and achieve 0-PPM standards.
The first tests have shown smooth functioning of the new system. The final validation is expected at end of summer or in early autumn. The system is set up in the clean room environment of the Hidria Automotive industry institute in Tolmin, Slovenia. The COMBILASER system thus supplements the already highly demanding and advanced automated machinery at the same location that has been provided for the manufacturing process of the new glow plug. Full functioning of the system together with the COMBILASER component is expected in beginning of 2018.
SiEVA's European project FACTS4WORKERS receives its own video
The European project FACTS4WORKERS, in which SiEVA plays an important role as the dissemination and exploitation leader has been given a promotional video end of this April. The film has been filmed at another partner, Hidria's hi-tech automotive industry institute in Tolmin, Slovenia.
The film which can be watched by clicking on this link, shows in picture and words the basic idea behind the project together with statements from our R&D partners. With this project SiEVA aims to use advanced IT solutions of the present age to improve working conditions for workers on the shop floor in the European industry. The film shows the prototype version of advanced IT system developed specifically for Hidria's automatized assembly lines together with short clips of the assembly process.
The four-year project which brings together 15 partners from 8 different countries is now entering its second phase. In this phase SiEVA's role focuses on important promotion actions where it will present the solutions to its stakeholders as well to interested Slovenian and European public.

COMBILASER PROJECT – Second technical review
On 13th March representatives of the SiEVA Development Centre, general manager Mr. Miloš Šturm, and Ms. Samanta Krapež, attended the second Technical review of the COMBILASER project that took place at the premises of the Laser Zentrum Hannover in Germany. SiEVA presented activities that were conducted in the project’s second year in field of project exploitation and dissemination which is SiEVA ‘s field of responsibility within COMBILASER.
The representatives of the European Commission who are reviewing the project have in addition to presentation of progress made in each of project’s work packages, given the opportunity to see a real-time presentation of the COMBILASER solution in the LZH labs. The test setup was prepared for the Hidria AET industrial use-case and its Pressure-sensor glow plug. The system consisted of a unique combination of a monitoring system, NDT – Non-destructive testing system and an advanced SLS – Self-learning system. This advanced and unique combination enables the welding process to function in accordance to zero-defect principles and avoid producing bad parts.
SiEVA Development Centre’s representatives were explicitly given praise regarding their intensive work in field of dissemination and exploitation in the project’s second year. This gives the team great boost ahead of the intensive third year which will form SiEVA’s side see strong involvement in the project’s upcoming industrial setup validation phase.
